Michael childress

Associate Professor of Biological Sciences

Michael is an evolutionary behavioral ecologist interested in behavioral plasticity in response to habitat loss and climate induced environmental changes. His interests range from the evolution of social behaviors to the role of herbivory and predation in the structure of coral reef communities. Michael has a BS degree in Biology / Marine Science from the University of Tampa, an MA degree in Zoology from University of California at Berkeley, and a PhD in biological sciences from Florida State University.

kea Payton

PhD student Biological Sciences

Kea is a fifth year PhD candidate in Biological Sciences with a interest in the ecological impacts of marine debris and marine debris removal on coral reef communities. Kea's project involves analysis of marine debris removed by community debris removal efforts and citizen science outreach. She is also involved in the development and assessment of marine science educational outreach for elementary schools through our Something Very Fishy STEAM program. Kea has a BS degree in marine biology from the University of North Carolina Wilmington and an MS degree in marine biology from the College of Charleston.

luke stoeber

MS student Biological Sciences

Luke is a second year MS student in Biological Sciences with a interest in coral reef cryptic biodiversity. Luke's project involves analysis of biodiversity found in coral rubble communities and their role in coral reef health. He conducted his first coral rubble manipulation study this summer. Luke has a BS in marine science from Jacksonville University.

Tara cronin

PhD student Biological Sciences

Tara is a fifth year PhD candidate in Biological Sciences that is interested in quantifying the cost and benefits of Branchiobdellid worms on host crayfish species across a gradient of water temperatures. Tara has been conducting a mark-recapture study of two local crayfish species in five streams that vary in temperature, pH and flow rate. She also is comparing individual variation in respiration and behavior with parasitic worm abundance. Tara has an MS in Biological Sciences and a BS degree in Integrative Biology and General Psychology from DePaul University. She has previously conducted and published research in paleontology, genomics, and behavioral parasitology.

sarah rider

phd student biological sciences

Sarah is a first year PhD student interested in the interaction between cryptofauna and coral restoration success. She hopes to use cryptofauna collectors (ARMS) to measure the impact of coral restoration on cryptofauna biodiversity on the FKNMS Mission Iconic Reef sites. Sarah has a MS degree from Duke University and a BS in Marine Science from Coastal Carolina University.
